SL: Majority say "yes" to a joint mechanism

Description

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) in separate statements, have expressed support for the proposed Joint post tsunami releif Mechanism.

The Central Committee of the SLFP has proposed the Mechanism for rebuilding areas of the North and East affected by the tsunami and for rebuilding the lives of the people in the said areas, should hereafter be called the Tsunami Relief Council and not the Tsunami Joint Mechanism as it is referred to now.

The Committee has made a strong request to the President to commence all necessary action without delay to institute the Relief Council.

The CWC in its statement said, "It has become a historical tradition in Sri Lanka for the oppositions to undermine the efforts of Governments to address the issues of the Tamil people" and that it was very necessary for a Joint Mechanism to be in place to best utilize the assistance Sri Lanka received through the Development Forum held in Kandy .

The EPDP in a statement said it believes that the inclusion of the LTTE in Joint Mechanism at the National, Provincial and District levels, while ensuring political and ethnic pluralism in such mechanisms, would open a window of opportunity for the LTTE and the others to begin a dialogue that could eventually lead to a lasing solution to the national problem.

The statement further says, "It is our view that there should not only be a mechanism to undertake relief and reconstruction, but that the mechanism should be such that all the affected people would be served by it. We believe that such a mechanism has to be broad-based, and ensure ethnic and political pluralism. It must also respect democratic traditions and human rights."
